Internet giant Google breaks ground today for new 2.45-hectare data centre in Singapore

SINGAPORE - Singapore's efforts to be a leading data centre hub received a boost today. Internet giant Google today announced the start of construction on its data centre here - its first in Southeast Asia. Google cited Asia as the fastest growing Internet population as a factor in setting up a data centre here. When the centre is up, the company's Internet services - such as its email services Gmail and possibly video-sharing site Youtube - to the region will be faster and more stable. The 2.45 hectare site located in Jurong west will be up by 2013. In another nod to the importance of data in the Internet era, JTC Corporation also announced its plans for the development of a 13-hectare data centre park.
