Asian evacuees arrive from Libya

NEW DELHI : The first Indian evacuees from Libya have arrived in New Delhi, telling reporters of robberies, looting and narrow escapes from spiralling violence as the revolt intensified. A state-run Air India flight carrying around 300 evacuees from Libya arrived at the airport in the Indian capital late Saturday and was greeted by India's foreign secretary Nirupama Rao. "This escape of mine makes me feel I am in heaven," said Mohammed Sali, 63, an engineer, who said he had been threatened with death by a knife-wielding gang which looted all his belongings. There are some 18,000 Indians in Libya of which 3,000 are believed to be in the eastern port city of Benghazi working for car companies, construction firms and hospitals, while others are scattered across the oil-rich country.
