An article on light pollution from the Astronomical Society of Singapore

Singapore, as you probably know, is a 'tough' place for engaging in sky-gazing activities - the many artificially lit streets and buildings and the preponderance of cloudy nights. However, this does not mean we can not just 'step outside' and enjoy the night sky. Currently we are at the limit of still having a suburban sky, that is barely dark enough to view some of the bright objects of the night sky. Is the public interested in night sky at all? Well, judging from the huge turnouts to view 98 Leonids in Sentosa, the 98 Aug, 22 Solar eclipse and the packed crowds at Science Centre to watch Comet Levy slam into Jupiter the message is clear - Singaporeans are genuinely interested in viewing celestial events! If we do not act now to 'halt' the continual increasing light pollution it will be a matter of years (2-3) before we lose all our sky to our own creation - light pollut...
