Voices: Review of entire transport model needed

THURSDAY'S service disruption has indicated the vital importance of the Mass Rapid Transit as a mode of transport for the masses. It also indicates that during peak hours, our public transport services are already operating at full capacity, with no excess to spare. When the disruption occurred, the bus bridging service could not be activated early, hence, the frustrated commuters. The issue at hand is not the cause of the disruption but that Singapore seems too dependent on the MRT to move the masses. I had stated in a past letter "Too dependent on trains now?" (March 30, 2010) that the hub-and-spoke model depends on the trains too much. Now, the latest service disruption resulted in commuters spending unproductive hours waiting to board bridging services (when activated) or finding other means of transport.
