A reader questions the silence of transport authorities on the taxi fare hikes

ALTHOUGH taxi fares are deregulated, it is puzzling that the transport authorities have kept silent amid the flurry of letters and public feedback on the fare increase. This is in contrast to the display of efforts to manage crowding on buses and trains, with the Transport Minister seen at train stations and on trains observing the situation, for instance. I was also disappointed that the National Taxi Association had urged taxi operators to follow ComfortDelGro's fare revisions, not just because it seemed like an attempt to fix prices, but also because its advisers are or were Members of Parliament. These are not reassuring signals, and it is time to review the policy of deregulated cab fares. We need to recognise that taxis are a necessity for some people due to health reasons or job requirements.
