Hence, because of the above reasons – declining reliability, poor crisis management and lack of security-consciousness – the MRT system operated by SMRT and SBS Transit should be surrendered to a new Statutory Board. The MRT system makes for a natural monopoly, and it makes little sense for it to be divided between two companies. The new Stat Board will be able to operate the MRT according to public and national objectives. Safety and security are likely to be better integrated without SMRT in the picture, since the government is more experienced. Furthermore, the Stat Board, like other agencies such as NEA, PUB etc do not look at profits. It is likely to pursue vigorously what matters most for commuters – reliability and affordability (especially concessions for polytechnic students and the disabled); similar to how NEA campaigns against dengue fever by checking household...
