Workers' Party questions inability of transport operators & govt agencies to deal with large crises

In a statement last night, the Workers' Party expressed deep concern about the disruptions, asking if they were "reflective of much deeper infrastructural and technical problems plaguing the 24-year old NS-EW lines". Were these due to "insufficient investments in maintenance and upgrades", and if so, was this the result of pressure on the train operator to maximise profits for its shareholders? Could the LTA as regulators have been more vigilant in "ensuring that quality of service and safety standards, including train maintenance and operations, were met by SMRT", the party asked. It also questioned the "apparent inability" of the operator and government agencies to "deal with crises of this scale" despite several large-scale civil emergency exercises.
