Public inquiry to be convened

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said a public inquiry would be convened to look into the past week's train disruptions, with the aim of making the system "more robust and reliable and fault tolerant". The committee will be appointed "within a couple of weeks", he added. Speaking to reporters after being briefed on the situation at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) headquarters yesterday afternoon - shortly after part of the North-South Line was disrupted for seven hours, the second major outage in three days - Mr Lee said it was important "to get to the bottom of the matter and get the system up and running safely again". "Had it just been a one-off matter, one incident and the matter is solved, then the operating agencies can take care of it," he said.
