Slower trains, reduced frequency a necessary measure: Transport Minister

SINGAPORE - After experiencing three train disruptions in four days, commuters will now have to bear with a reduced frequency of trains in the morning and slower trains along certain stretches of the MRT network. But these new measures, which kick in today, are necessary after a 12-hour, overnight inspection - conducted by staff from SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) - discovered 61 rail defects and 13 faulty trains. With the defective trains removed from service, there will be an additional 12 seconds of waiting time - on top of the usual two minutes - during morning peak periods. The LTA has also imposed a temporary speed restriction of 40kph for trains moving along the stretch between the Somerset and Marina Bay Stations, as well as between the Outram and Raffles Place Stations.
