Letters: Benefits of GST rebates should be made clearer

I refer to the GST Offset Package, which was a set of comprehensive measures announced in Budget 2007 to help Singaporeans with the increase in GST to 7 per cent. The GST Offset Package was S$4 billion paid over five years. I believe many of us have forgotten about the GST rebate, and some probably could not understand the intricacy of the GST indirect tax system well enough. Some Opposition parties have called for zero-rated GST on essential items. Each family receiving a S$200 GST rebate means S$3,057 of their buying of basic essential items like rice, sugar, milk, cooking oil, and so on, during the year are GST-free. I would like to suggest the Government set up a separate 'GST-Rebate Fund' in the Budget to show clearly the GST rebate given to Singaporeans.
