1 in 10 organ transplant applications rejected here

SINGAPORE - Nearly one in 10 applications for a living donor organ transplant last year was rejected by the transplant ethics committees of hospitals. Fourteen of the 156 applications last year were rejected for various reasons, including possible suspicion about the "motives behind the applications", said Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan in Parliament yesterday. He was responding to Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Ahmad Magad's question on the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA), as well as Jurong GRC MP Halimah Yacob's question on reasons for rejected applications. Most living donations were between family members and close relatives, Mr Khaw said. In such cases, the family usually pools resources to pay for all medical expenses.
