China to tackle rural problems

BEIJING: China will roll out its 12th Five Year Plan when the National People's Congress begins its annual session on Saturday. One key focus of the session will be to improve rural welfare and increase rural incomes. The ongoing drought in China has affected over 6.7 million hectares of winter wheat. The four-month-long drought, which is also the driest winter in 60 years, has made planting of spring corps extremely difficult. The drought is expected to lead to an increase in domestic food prices, and in order to tackle the lack of precipitation, the Ministry of Finance has allocated over US$1.1 million to induce rain in drought-hit areas."
