New seat belt rules based on height

SINGAPORE : Police have announced changes to the seat belt rule which takes effect from January 1 next year. Under the new rules, the height instead of age will be used to determine the use of child restraints, booster seats or approved adjustable seat belts in vehicles. Anyone below the height of 1.35 metres will be required to use child restraints, booster seat cushions or adjustable seat belts. At present, the rules apply to a child below the age of eight. Police said a one-month grace period will be given to motorists to comply with the new rules and enforcement will begin from February next year. Police said the change was made in consultation with the Ministry of Health and following a review of international standards and practices.
