Use of social media will help shape Elected Presidency: analysts

SINGAPORE : In August, over two million Singaporeans voted in a new President for the first time in 19 years. The 2011 Presidential election was only the second one to be held since the Office of the Elected President was created in 1991. It was a fiercely-fought campaign and a contest of ideas, with candidates offering varying interpretations of the President's role. And for the first time, the Presidential hopefuls made use of social media to get their messages out. On September 1, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam began his six-year term at the Istana, with a promise to represent all Singaporeans. During his swearing-in ceremony, he said: "Our President is not a centre of political power. The office is non-partisan. But our President can be a resource. And our President can be a symbol."
