More organ failure patients opting for outpatient antibiotics treatment

SINGAPORE: More organ failure patients are seeking outpatient antibiotics treatment in recent years. And the number tends to spike during the year-end period, as these patients choose to spend the festive holidays with their loved ones. Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) runs a clinic that teaches caregivers to inject the antibiotics safely. The treatment is called Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotics Therapy. It only takes a lesson or two, and after that, the medicine can be administered at home. Patients can also come to the clinic for an intravenous drip. Compared to a hospital stay, these treatments can lower medical fees by about 40 per cent. It also means patients get more time at home and a smaller risk of contracting an infection.
