2011 is the year Singapore ran wild with the word 'festival' for many huge events

Festival this, festival that. It was undoubtedly the most overused word in the world of arts, entertainment and lifestyle these past 12 months, as if the inclusion of the word would automatically bring in an audience. A quick survey among my colleagues in the features desk and we reckoned there were at least 100 "festivals" - before promptly deciding that was actually a rather conservative estimate. You had the usual big and established ones, of course, like the Singapore Arts Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, Singapore Food Festival and the Audi Fashion Festival, among others. The Esplanade rolled out its regular year-long line-up like Mosaic and da:ns Festivals. Independently produced ones like the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, Man Singapore Theatre Festival and Laneway Festival also said hello even as the Singapore Sun Festival disappeared without a trace.
