FORGOTTEN.Victims of Philippine ex-dictator Marcos' regime finally compensated

PHILIPPINES: 25 years after a peaceful uprising ousted late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, thousands of victims of human rights abuses are finally receiving compensation. More than 7,500 people suffered human rights abuses during Marcos' regime. The funds come from a US$10 million settlement involving Marcos' assets held in the United States. Each victim is eligible to receive a cheque of 43,200 pesos (US$1,000). For 85-year-old construction worker Mr Felix Arellano - whose wife and children were detained and tortured for four years - the money is a symbol of triumph over tyranny. "The small compensation is not important. What is important is that what we fought for bore fruit. This recognition will hopefully benefit younger generations", said Mr Arellano. Lead counsel Robert Swift hopes that the children of the former dictator will now work for a global settlement ...
