More hospital patients seeking speech therapy

SINGAPORE: Hospitals here have been seeing more patients seeking speech therapy. The Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has seen an eight per cent annual increase in patient visits between 2008 and last year. Every year, it handles more than 19,000 patients a year for speech therapy. Over at the National University Hospital, it saw 11,000 speech therapy visits last year, compared to 8,000 in 2008. One of the patients at SGH is 44-year-old Kwek Joo Kwang. He suffered a stroke and as a result, he also lost his sense of speech. This was a huge setback for him as communication was key in his job as an insurance agent. He said: "That is a nightmare if I cannot speak because I cannot cannot sell and I cannot train.
