Cities, prefectures in Japan review tsunami preparedness

SHIZUOKA: Various cities and prefectures around Japan are reviewing their tsunami preparedness, following the disaster in March. One of them is Shizuoka Prefecture which lies on one of the most high risk earthquake fault lines in Japan. The prefecture recently conducted a drill at a fishing area in Yaizu, a city with a population of 167,000 people. Residents upon hearing the siren are required to head towards higher ground. One resident said: "I've started to become concerned about tsunami. We focused on earthquakes and not much about tsunami." Residents are supposed to evacuate in just five minutes. Yaizu, a fishing area with a coastline spanning 15.5 kilometers, faces the Suruga Bay. The area has seawalls and petroleum tanks covered by fences that are meant to serve as cushions if boats hit them. There are also 4.5-metre high platforms by the sea for workers near the por...
