Treat people with mental illness fairly

SINGAPORE: The public and employers should try to look at people with mental illnesses in a positive light, especially in the workplace. That is the call from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) Job Club, as it presses on with efforts to help them get a fair chance for jobs. Job Club, launched in November 2009, is a one-stop vocational rehabilitation service that helps persons with mental illness select, secure and keep a job. One of the companies which hired a worker matched by Job Club is Horsburgh Engineering. It has hired more than 30 workers with mental illnesses over the years, including "Mr Tan", who suffers from schizophrenia. "Mr Tan", described as a diligent and reliable cleaner, has been with the company for four years. He values his job as he had been unemployed for nine years because of his condition.
