(TODAY) PUB: Why Orchard Road flooded last week

SINGAPORE - Heavy afternoon rain over three hours in the Orchard Road area on Dec 23 caused flooding and hit places such as Thomson and Cambridge, as well as the basements of Liat Towers and Lucky Plaza. National water agency PUB said this morning that 152.8mm of rain fell from 2.20pm to 5.20pm that day. Put into context, that is more than half a month's worth of rain in three hours. The average monthly total for the entire month of December over the past 142 years has been 287.4mm of rain. PUB said it understands that the public is concerned about the adequacy of measures taken to date and takes its responsibility for flood management seriously. While it is not possible to completely eliminate flash floods, it will do everything feasible to prevent it, mitigate it and keep the public informed, PUB said.
