More to be done about social mobility: Shanmugaratnam

SINGAPORE - There is still social mobility here, even if it may not be as fast as before - this was the assessment of Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam as he addressed a common concern voiced by several Members of Parliament (MP). Said the Finance Minister: "This means we have to put more effort into our mobility efforts from now on, so as to prevent a cycle of disadvantage among lower-income children and families." According to Mr Shanmugaratnam, half of the pupils from families in the bottom third of the social-economic strata end up with Primary School Leaving Examination scores that put them in the top two-thirds of their class. He also noted that the proportion of 25- to 39-year-olds with polytechnic or higher qualifications increased to 64 per cent last year, from "less than 10 per cent" in 1980.
