"Incomes of S'poreans do not grow 30% just like that": Low Thia Khiang on salaries of political leaders

THE issues of recruitment and talent retention in the Civil Service - which includes political leaders - were brought up in Parliament yesterday by East Coast GRC MP Jessica Tan during the cut for the Prime Minister's Office. Among her questions, Ms Tan asked Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also the Minister-in-charge of the Civil Service, how does he see the sector as "being able to create a conducive and stimulating environment to attract talent and enable them to pursue their interests and ambitions?" On Monday, Opposition leader Low Thia Khiang also referred to the salaries of political leaders during the Budget Debate. Mr Low noted a 30-per-cent increase in FY2010 in the estimated salary for political appointments. "Unfortunately, the incomes of Singaporeans do not grow 30 per cent just like that," Mr Low added.
