SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines says it is making preparations to procure pollution permits to fly to Europe. In a statement to MediaCorp, SIA says it is not ruling out any option to recover the additional burden from having to buy the permits - that includes passing down the costs to passengers. Under new rules that kicked in yesterday, airlines offering services in Europe will have to buy pollution permits through the European Union (EU) Emissions Trading System (ETS) and this is expected to lead to higher costs. Airlines worldwide have criticised the new rule, saying it is a new tax and would cost the industry billions of dollars. According to media reports, refusing to comply could cost an airline €100 (S$168) per ton of carbon dioxide emissions, with the possibility of being denied the right to land in the 27-nation European Union in extreme cases.
