I ECHO Mr Chan Teck Guan's sentiments, in his letter "S-League for MSL trade-off, FAS?" (Dec 30), and like him, I am disappointed with the recent state of football affairs here. The Football Association of Singapore should explain clearly to the fans the genuine reasons for returning to the Malaysia Cup. In 1995, FAS announced the withdrawal from the competition, so as to expand and self-sustain the growing local football community. It was argued that the limited participation in the Malaysia Cup had restricted talent development on and off the field, and there was concern over the ability to maintain high competitive standards and cater to the increasing numbers participating in the game. This led to the birth of the S-League in 1996. Like Mr Chan, I am a proud Singaporean who believes in planting the seeds of success for our national football league. Hence, I am perplexe...
