NTUC to provide advisory services to freelancers

SINGAPORE: Singapore's labour movement wants to represent freelancers, to ensure their rights are protected. It has been meeting different groups of freelancers for the past four months to understand their concerns and as part of outreach efforts. The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) told Channel NewsAsia that it intends to provide advisory services to this group of workers. A survey commissioned by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts in 2007 showed there are about 29,000 freelancers in Singapore. The survey also highlighted some of the difficulties faced by these workers. These include not being paid on time and a lack of benefits. The labour movement believes more can be done to help these workers.
