Saving energy, the Japanese way

MISHIMA, Japan: A residential area in the city of Mishima, in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, has been built as a showcase of environmentally-friendly technologies available in the market today. The houses, of various designs, were built by seven different housing companies. The roofs of these houses were fitted with solar panels that can produce three to four kilowatts of energy per day. There are also no electric poles and wires to obstruct the solar panels. This residential area was completed in February, with the residents moving in in March. There are 22 household or about 80 residents in the area, which is about 6000 square metres. The local gas company, Shizuoka Gas, supervises the project. Toshihiro Nakai, manager of Low Carbon System at Shizuoka Gas, said: "The concept of this housing area is, capability of creating sustainable energy conservation. We have fuel cells...
