YANGON - The price of petrol at privately owned retail outlets in Myanmar has gone up by 34 per cent, the sort of increase that has caused unrest in the past in a country where a third of the estimated 55 million people live on less than US$1 (S$1.30) a day. There was no announcement of the price increase and motorists only found out when they went to a filling station from Jan 1. "The price of petrol has been raised from 2,500 kyat (S$4.05) to 3,350 kyat per gallon although diesel and octane remain the same," said the manager of a central Yangon filling station, declining to be named. He said the authorities had raised the wholesale price without notice so the retail price was adjusted to be in line with it. He added that the daily ration of fuel remained unchanged at two gallons (9 litres) . Drivers who need more have to turn to the black market. Yangon taxi drivers said...
