Singapore stocks close firmer on bargain hunting

SINGAPORE : Share prices in Singapore ended higher on Thursday as investors hunted for bargains among blue chip issues. Traders said sentiment was encouraged by optimistic comments from the Federal Reserve about the US economy. The US central bank said economic activity kept slowly gaining strength as 2011opened and manufacturers and retailers were having some success in pushing their prices up. The ST index rose 9.84 points to 3,037.35 on a volume of 1,303 million shares. There were 311 advances against 157 losing issues by the close of the session. However concerns over the Middle East situation and high oil prices sidelined many investors. Buyers were attracted by commodity shares such as Wilmar which gained 9 cents to $5.16 and Golden Agri-Resources which added 1.5 cents to 70 cents. Among active shares, offshore oil and gas services firm Dyna-Mac Holding rose 6.5 cent...
