Sportsmen shouldn't be accorded privileges during NS

I am concerned, after reading "Stage set for LionsXII's MSL opener" (Jan 3), that team manager Eugene Loo is in touch with the relevant ministries to secure the release of 10 players, who are in National Service, for the team's away matches. The LionsXII is a club participating in Malaysia's football league and not the national team playing in the World Cup or Asian Cup. Its players are not representing the nation. So why should preferential treatment be given to these players when thousands of soldiers continue to shoulder their responsibilities with pride, building camaraderie throughout their NS duration? All national sports associations should recognise NS as a key institution vital to Singapore's security.
