#SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa resigns

SMRT chief executive officer Saw Phaik Hwa has resigned today (Jan 6), say sources. Her resignation comes less than a month after SMRT suffered some of the worst breakdowns in its 24-year history. The first breakdown happened on Dec 15 and affected commuters taking the Circle Line. On Dec 15 and 17, the North-South line was affected. This prompted SMRT to halt train services on Dec 18 to 'conduct a full inspection of the tracks and trains'. In a statement issued by the SMRT to the Stock Exchange of Singapore, it said that Tan Ek Kia will "assume interim executive responsibility of the management of SMRT while the Board [of Directors] conducts a search for a new CEO."
