SMRT CEO Saw resigns, board member appointed as interim CEO

SINGAPORE - SMRT Corporation's president and chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa, 57, has resigned with immediate effect. Her resignation comes shortly after SMRT suffered its worst train breakdowns in over two decades, prompting calls from among the public for Ms Saw to step down. In a statement released on Friday evening, SMRT's board of directors said they accepted her offer of resignation. Board member Tan Ek Kia, 62, will assume interim executive responsibility for the management of SMRT while the board searches for a new CEO. Mr Tan said he will focus on rail operations. Ms Saw will remain with the Group to assist with investigations on the December train disruptions and with the transition to a new executive leadership.
