Govt to work with economic agencies to create more opportunities for SMEs

SINGAPORE : The government will work with economic agencies to create more business opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). One of the initiatives, SME Market Access Programme, has benefited 87 SMEs since it was launched a year ago. Over the last five years Singapore's GDP grew by 6.4 percent per annum, while median resident household income grew by 2.6 percent per annum. And with Asia emerging as a key global growth engine, Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, said Singapore "can take advantage of the growth opportunities arising from that". The SME Market Access Programme helps SMEs venture overseas. To help companies make better use of such schemes, the government said that trade associations and chambers could play a bigger role.
