SINGAPORE - Pro bono legal services to help the needy are set to get a leg up here, as the legal year opens. In his address to the legal fraternity at the Supreme Court yesterday morning, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong announced that the two law schools in Singapore have agreed to a proposal for a mandatory pro bono programme for law undergraduates, as suggested by the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. Foreign students will have to complete pro bono modules for their qualifying exams. Stressing that volunteer work needs to be cultivated early, CJ Chan cited how 21 law schools in the United States have made pro bono work a graduation requirement. He also noted that the Singapore Management University's Juris Doctor students are required to commit up to 80 hours with a voluntary welfare organisation, or an organisation providing pro bono legal aid work.
