SINGAPORE - Elderly smokers who think it is too late to quit smoking, think again: A large-scale study here has countered this misconception. Based on interviews with more than 48,000 people with an average age of 61.5 years, the study showed that ex-smokers too will be able to achieve a reduction in health risks within five years of kicking the habit. Compared to those who maintain their smoking habit, this group of new quitters was found to have lowered their risk of death by about 15 per cent. Recent quitters would be able to reduce their risks of dying from lung cancer by more than 20 per cent as compared to current smokers. For coronary heart disease, the risk drops by 15 per cent for recent quitters. The study, which was published in Tobacco Control Journal last month, was carried out between 1993 and 2009.
