This amount is 20 per cent more than last year's donations and the highest since the religious charity began its annual hongbao event in 1949, a spokesman said. The hongbaos will be distributed to a total of 11,697 people, the majority of whom are aged Singapore residents in homes, and those on public assistance. Each person will receive between $10 and $180 in each red packet. Co-organisers of the event include Jamiyah Singapore and the Singapore Taoist Federation. Recipients of the hongbaos comprise Singaporeans of different faiths and ethnicities.
