Consumers get greater protection against unsafe products

SINGAPORE - From next month, consumers will have greater protection against unsafe products. The Consumer Protection Act has been expanded to include goods such as toys, sports equipment and baby products - a move that will see the list of categories under the Act balloon from 45 to an estimated 15,000. The Act at present covers 45 items - which are considered "controlled goods" and come under more stringent checks. For instance, suppliers are required to register their products with SPRING Singapore. Under the new Consumer Goods Safety Requirements, which come into force on April 1, suppliers will have to ensure products meet international safety standards. These include those laid out by the European Standards Organisation, ASTM International in the US, as well as additional requirements specified by SPRING.
