Thai government, opposition get ready for battle (Straits Times)

BANGKOK - WHEN Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva appeared at Bangkok's famed weekend market in Chatuchak on Feb 26, it was widely seen as a soft launch for his Democrat Party's election campaign. The beaming Oxford-educated Premier was photographed holding a red rose and being mobbed by delighted locals. A four-point campaign promise was announced the same weekend. Mr Abhisit does not have to call an election until December, but Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban has said it could be held by June. Both the government and opposition parties, however, have already entered election mode, with goodies being promised and charges and counter-charges over vote-buying and wooing members of each other's parties flying.
