BANGKOK - SEVERAL hundred thousand mourners gathered in a remote corner of Thailand on Saturday to attend the cremation of one of the country's most famous Buddhist monks, police said. Ordinary Thais, royalty and a sea of saffron-robed monks flocked to a forest temple in Udon Thani, near the border with Laos, to pay tribute to Luang Ta Maha Bua Yannasampanno, who died in January aged 97. The monk is best known for a fundraising drive that has resulted in more than 12 tonnes of gold being donated to the Thai central bank. Luang Ta Bua launched the campaign to replenish the country's national reserves in the wake of Thailand's 1997 currency devaluation and the subsequent Asian financial crisis.
