Being vegetarian might not be the healthiest choice, a reader writes

I REFER to the I Say piece "It's not our parents' vegetarianism any more" (Jan 2). Is vegetarianism right for us today? Compared to 30 years ago, vegetables grown today have 27 per cent less calcium, 37 per cent less iron, 21 per cent less vitamin A and 30 per cent less vitamin C. Yes, vegetarianism is a wonderful cleanser in the short term, but in the long term, it is a disaster, especially for those who do not eat meat, fish, eggs and cheese, etc. Besides vitamin B-12, some conjugated linoleic acid comes only from being processed in an animal. Generally, getting enough omega-3 oils is a problem for vegetarians , as the ratio tends to be more omega-6 in vegetables. So saturated fat is needed.
