Ms Denise Phua (Moulmein-Kallang GRC) on Monday asked about subtitles for the Prime Minister's National Day Rally speech, election rally broadcasts and national security announcements for hearing-impaired Singaporeans. The minister said in response that the Media Development Authority has started talks with broadcaster MediaCorp to identify solutions that are feasible and cost-effective. Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, who is the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, also said subtitling could be resource-intensive, especially for live broadcasts. In the case of the National Day Rally, it would be difficult to provide subtitles during the live transmission as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong does not use a prepared text, and the transcript of his speech is available only after the event, Dr Yaacob said.
