Hospitals to implement initiative to encourage breastfeeding

SINGAPORE: The Health Promotion Board (HPB) is working with five maternity hospitals to make them baby-friendly, in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. They aim to earn certification for "Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative" by the WHO. The initiative includes antenatal education, extended skin-to-skin contact after delivery, rooming-in with the baby for 24 hours a day, encouraging breastfeeding on demand and supporting breastfeeding post-discharge. The five are National University Hospital, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore General Hospital, Mount Alvernia Hospital and Thomson Medical Centre. It aims to have National University Hospital certified by this year.
