Indian government hit by another scandal

NEW DELHI : India's government has been hit by another scandal. The Supreme Court has quashed the appointment of the top corruption watchdog due to his alleged involvement in an oil import case. The morale of the Congress-led coalition government is at an all-time low. It is battling a severe image crisis with its prime minister being seen as an error-prone decision maker. The latest to add to his woes is the Central Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas. He was appointed to the post last year, by a panel headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dismissing his appointment, the Supreme court reproached the government for not taking into account a previous corruption allegation. Mr Thomas had been accused of involvement in a deal to import 15,000 tonnes of palm oil from Malaysia at inflated prices in 1992.
