Port of Singapore continues to register good growth

SINGAPORE: The number of containers passing through the Port of Singapore reached a record in 2011. Container throughput grew by 5.3 per cent from the previous year, hitting 29.94 million standard container units or Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This surpasses the previous record set in 2008 by about 0.1 per cent. That's according to advanced estimates released by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew at the Singapore Maritime Foundation's new year reception. Total cargo throughput also reached a new record for Singapore. It increased by 5.4 per cent on-year to 530.5 million tonnes in 2011. In terms of tonnage, total vessels calling at Singapore's ports last year grew by 10.5 per cent to 2.12 billion gross tons (GT).
