Fruit seller amazes customers with fluent Tamil

SINGAPORE : Shoppers at Tiong Bahru have an added reason to hang around a fruit shop in their market. Their fruit seller speaks four languages - English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Yap Ha Kuan, a father of four, has never had any formal education in Tamil. But he picked up the language as a kid growing up in a Malaysia. He said: "People will question how come I can speak in fluent Tamil. They also ask me if my parents are Indian. But I will tell them that I picked up the language from my friends at a young age." Mr Yap said learning a foreign language is a piece of cake for him. One customer, Ms Sindhu, said: "He is speaking in Tamil so fluently. It is really astonishing." Mr Yap's advice to anyone keen on languages is to learn one's mother tongue first.
