Early action against alcohol addiction

Singapore - Viewing alcoholism as a simmering issue, some community groups are not waiting and are tackling the problem now. They are diagnosing patients with alcohol-related disorders, doubling meetings for alcoholics and calling for more attention to be devoted to fighting alcohol addiction here. To screen inpatients on alcohol-use disorders, the Changi General Hospital (CGH) started a screening programme within its psychiatric service in November 2009. The CGH has detected 552 cases since, with around seven in 10 cases for alcohol-use disorders and 20 per cent for abuse of benzodiazepine - a type of tranquilliser. The rest are for other addictions, including gambling. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a support group, is also extending its outreach by conducting educational talks in schools and hospitals about alcohol addiction, while contributing books and pamphlets.
