Worker threatens to kill himself unless employer pays $15,000

For more than three hours, Ai Yong Li clung on to scaffolding seven stories up in heavy rain, threatening to throw himself down to his death unless his employer gave him $15,000. The Chinese national wanted this amount as compensation for alleged back injuries sustained while working for Yangzijiang International, a sub-contractor responsible for the structural work at a work site near Holland Village. Ai, 35, was jailed on Friday by a district court for two and a half months after pleading guilty to committing criminal trespass. Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhong Zewei said that Ai sneaked into the construction site of Holland Residences at Taman Warna at 11.40am on Oct 19, 2011, while off-duty.
