China watches Taiwan election online

BEIJING: Millions of people in China accustomed to one-party rule at home got a front-row seat of democracy in action on Saturday watching Taiwan's hotly contested presidential election live online. China's major Internet portals tallied in real time votes for the incumbent Ma Ying-jeou and his two challengers, Tsai Ing-wen and James Soong, as Taiwan -- which Beijing claims as its own -- went to the polls. Leading portal Sina dedicated a page to the contest with pictures of the candidates, their votes ticking upwards every few seconds and colourful maps of the island China considers a rogue province divided into voting districts.
