Seizing opportunities in China's property market

SINGAPORE - The economic stresses that have weighed on China's property market in the past year are presenting an opportunity for Singapore's biggest developer, CapitaLand. CapitaLand chief executive Liew Mun Leong told MediaCorp in China last week that the downturn in economic growth globally has created an environment that is conducive to strategic investments. "In any down cycle, in any crisis, there will always be opportunity for distressed properties - whether it's in China or America or Malaysia or Japan," he said. "It's common or natural that, in the down cycle, there will be distressed property, which for us will be an opportunity." Mr Liew says, however, that future returns on an investment are more important than the price paid for an asset.
