Dubai to ensure Singaporeans in trouble get consular help

The authorities in Dubai have given the Singapore Government the assurance that Singaporeans detained in the emirate will be given prompt access to consular assistance. This follows the Singapore Consulate-General there asking to be informed promptly whenever Singaporeans are detained, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has said. The MFA's reply, in response to queries from The Straits Times, came in the wake of a Singaporean family being wrongfully detained in Dubai on Christmas Eve last year. There were at least three other such cases in the past two years, said the MFA, as a growing number of Singaporeans travel to Dubai for business and leisure. An MFA spokesman said: 'The ministry takes a very serious view of the incidents which involved the failure to allow for a few cases of detained Singaporeans access to consular assistance.'
